WIS Support Resources

The Women’s Issues Subcommittee (WIS) developed 3 resources to assist dental officers attain recognition for their contributions and achievements.

1.  WIS Awards Initiative

The Women’s Issues Subcommittee (WIS) has developed an awards initiative to assist dental officers attain recognition for their contributions and achievement.   We have created some award examples that may be used as narrative templates for various PHS awards.  Additionally, we have posted a powerpoint presentation (click here) describing the awards process and some common pitfalls. The WIS members will provide a narrated web-based offering of the slide presentation on Thursday, November 19, 2009 from 11:30-12:30 (Eastern). Call-in information and additional details will be disseminated on the Dental category listserv (DENTIST-L@LIST.NIH.GOV) by October 23.

2.  WIS Activity Tracking Initiative

The Women’s Issues Subcommittee (WIS) has developed an activity tracking template (click here) and officer support initiative to assist dental officers to describe and document contributions and achievement beyond their general duties.   We have created a template that may be used as a tracking vehicle to record daily activities in both a narrative and categorical format.  The template is designed to be customized by the individual officer to best fit the nature of the activities that you are likely to be involved in.  The spreadsheet will automatically calculate the number of hours (or number of activities) you enter in a specified category.  It is expected that this tool may help officers in providing milestone development, documentation of achievement, and for noting progress towards established goals.

3.  WIS CV Feedback Initiative

The Women’s Issues Subcommittee (WIS) is committed to assisting female dental officers in developing their Curriculum Vitae (CV) to best reflect their strengths and contributions.   As part of this initiative, the WIS members will provide CV review and feedback to female dental officers. For our initial effort, WIS members will provide this service to the first ten female dental officers who make a “reservation” and submit their CV for review.  Comments and feedback will be provided to the submitting officer and information will not be shared or used for any other purpose other than to provide constructive feedback to the officer.  Please send your Curriculum Vitae to CDR Leira A. Vargas-Del Toro at lvargas-deltoro@bop.gov before July 31, 2011. We will accept the first 10 CV’s for review.

4.   WIS Dental Public Health Specialty

The Women’s Issues Subcommittee (WIS) is committed to assisting dental officers in career development and educational achievement. As part of this initiative, the following weblinks are provided for access to information about dental public health residency education, training, experience, and certification.
